About the Product
What is Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses?
Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses is the first "Just Add Water" bake-at-home birthday cake for horses and ponies.
Designed for horse lovers of all ages and disciplines, our mix takes the guesswork out of baking the perfect equine-friendly cake. No special skills required, just love.
Because when you already treat them like family, why wouldn't you bake them a cake?
Fun Fact: Horses have been shown to remember humans who have treated them kindly, even after years apart. When you celebrate your horse, they feel it.
Is this really the first cake mix for horses?
Yes! Horse enthusiasts have been making homemade horse cakes for years, but until now there has never been a dedicated, ready-to-mix product like this. Whether you want to bake a birthday cake for your horse, celebrate a pony's gotcha day, or mark any milestone moment, Winning Hearts™ makes it simple.
Can horses eat cake?
They absolutely can, when it's made with horse-friendly ingredients. Traditional human cakes contain lots of sugar, as well as dairy, oil and other ingredients that are not always appropriate for horses.
Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses is formulated specifically for equines, made with wholesome ingredients your horse can safely enjoy.
What's in the cake mix?
Our Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses is made with plant-based, human-grade ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Simple ingredients like whole rolled oats, oat flour, coconut flour, ground flaxseeds, apples and molasses make this a treat horses love and you can feel good about.
Fun Fact: A horse's sense of smell is significantly more powerful than a human's. Before your horse even sees the cake, they'll smell it coming. That nicker of anticipation? The best sound in the world!
Is this safe for horses?
Yes. Our recipe is formulated with equine dietary needs in mind and has been reviewed by a PhD equine nutritionist. The formulation prioritizes safety, palatability, and nutritional appropriateness for horses.
That said, every horse is different. If your horse or pony has specific dietary restrictions or health concerns, we always recommend checking with your veterinarian before introducing any new treat.
As with any treat, portion size matters. Please refer to the feeding guidelines on the package, which are based on equine body weight, to ensure intake remains within the recommended range for your horse's size. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
Is this suitable for horses with metabolic conditions or allergies?
We do not recommend this product for equines with insulin dysregulation, metabolic conditions, or a history of laminitis. When in doubt, check with your veterinarian.
Baking & Preparation
How do I make Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses?
It could not be simpler. Just add water, mix, and bake. The batter comes together in seconds. Bake according to the package directions, let it cool completely, add your horse's favorite toppings, and celebrate. If you've been searching for a horse cake recipe that is actually easy to make, this is it. No baking experience required. That’s reason enough to buy Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses.
What size pan should I use?
The mix is formulated to fit an 8-inch round cake pan. Use a smaller pan and the cake will look taller; use a larger pan and it will turn out flatter. Either way, your horse won't mind.
Prefer something smaller and shareable? One mix also makes two 4-inch mini cakes. One for your horse and one for their barn bestie. Because every good party needs a plus one!
What type of pan should I use?
We recommend a deep round pan, but square pans and cupcake pans work great too. We especially love baking this cake in a silicone baking mold. Heart-shaped molds are a favorite for birthdays and Valentine's Day.
Mini muffin pans are another great option when you want lots of small, handheld treats. Bake a full batch, freeze what you don't use for up to six months, and pull one out whenever your horse deserves a little something extra. Just be sure to thaw completely before serving.
How do I make my cake look as pretty as possible?
Use the correct size pan. An 8-inch round is ideal. Once the cake has cooled, use a wet spatula to smooth and shape the dome. The result is a perfectly formed, photo-ready cake exactly the right height for snapping that classic nose-to-cake shot with your equine bestie. Add fresh toppings and it makes it look like you spent hours on the ultimate birthday cake for your horse.
What if I underbake my cake?
We recommend baking the cake fully until the center is completely cooked through and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. When in doubt, give it a few more minutes in the oven and enjoy the warm, toasty scent of oats filling your kitchen.
Do I need any special equipment?
No special equipment needed. A mixing bowl, a spatula or spoon, a measuring cup, a baking pan, nonstick cooking spray, and water are all it takes. We designed this to be completely accessible for any horse person, regardless of baking experience.
Why wouldn't I just bake my own horse cake from scratch?
You can! But with Winning Hearts™, there’s no hunting down the right ingredients, no guess-work about what’s horse-safe, and no measuring cups to wash afterward. Just add water, mix, and bake.
The whole thing comes together in minutes, and the result is a photo-worthy treat that horses love.
Less time in the kitchen means more time with your equine bestie!
Can I serve this cake mix as a wet mash without baking it?
Yes, serving Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses as a wet mash is a perfect option for busy barn days, warm weather celebrations, or offsite events like horse shows and trail rides where there is no oven available.
Add 3 parts water to 1 part mix, sprinkle with your horse's or pony's favorite toppings, and get your phone ready.
The slurping sound is absolutely worth capturing!
As with any treat, portion size matters. Refer to our Feeding Guide on our packaging to determine the right amount based on your horse's weight.
Toppings, Decoration & Serving
What toppings can I add?
Get creative with your horse's favorites. Fresh apples and carrots are crowd-pleasers. You know your horse or pony best! The cake is designed to be a canvas for personalization, so you can make every celebration unique for each individual horse.
What flavors do horses like best?
Horses tend to gravitate toward naturally sweet flavors. Popular topping choices from our community include bananas, peppermints, apples, and carrots. But don't stop there! Horses also love the flavor of pumpkin, turmeric, sweet potato, anise, strawberry, cherry, and watermelon.
For toppings with a little extra flair, try freeze-dried coconut chips or banana chips for a satisfying crunch.
The Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses itself is formulated with palatability top of mind. No toppings required. We've had horses finish their slice before their owners could even get a photo!
Can I add icing or sprinkles?
Absolutely! After the cake cools, try drizzling on sticky molasses or adding a dollop of applesauce or thick coconut cream. Sprinkles are also a fun addition to add color!
Just remember: Anything you add to your cake will increase the calorie count, so consult your vet if you have any concerns.
Can I add candles?
This is a question for your barn owner. Lit candles are a fire hazard, especially in barns and around hay.
How do I serve it to my horse?
First, let your horse smell the cake. Trust us, they are going to get excited. Then slice or break off a piece and offer it with a flat hand. They'll gobble it up and ask for more!
Looking for that smash cake moment? Present the entire cake in a flat, stable container or directly on a clean surface your horse can safely access. The cake is designed to crumble when eaten so grab your phone, hit slo-mo, and get ready for the best kind of mess!
Always provide access to fresh water when serving and monitor portions to ensure your horse or pony does not consume more than the recommended amount. Supervise them while they enjoy this product, just as you would with any treat.
Fun Fact: Horses are one of the few animals proven to recognize human facial expressions and remember them for years. Your horse knows when you are celebrating them. Make it count!
How many servings are in one mix?
Each mix makes one full-sized 8” cake, perfect for slicing and sharing with barn friends. Always check with a horse's owner before sharing with any horse other than your own, and refer to the product packaging for serving size guidance based on each horse's weight.
How should I store the cake mix?
Some things belong in the barn. Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses belongs in your pantry. Avoid storing your mix in a tack trunk, feed room, or a sun-baked trailer. Proper storage means every oat stays fresh, every flavor stays vibrant, and your horse gets the full experience from the very first sniff to the very last crumb.
Once baked, cakes should be served within 24 hours, or refrigerated and enjoyed within 48 hours. Cakes can be frozen up to 6 months.
Celebrating
What occasions should I celebrate with a Winning Hearts™ horse cake?
Any occasion worth celebrating! The most common are birthdays, gotcha days, retirements, show wins, and barn anniversaries. Holidays are extra fun too: Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas, and more. But don't wait for a big milestone. For those of us who treat our horses like family, sometimes they just deserve cake.
Fun Fact: The average horse heart weighs about 9 to 10 pounds, compared to less than a pound for a human. Big hearts deserve big celebrations!
How do I celebrate my horse's or pony's birthday?
Start with cake, obviously. Then consider the full experience: festive decorations, a birthday banner, a special photo session, and the priceless reaction when your horse takes that first bite. Whether you are celebrating a horse's birthday or a pony's special day, Winning Hearts™ makes the moment easy to pull off and impossible to forget.
Fun Fact: Modern horses commonly live 25 to 30 years, with proper care. That's a lot of birthdays worth celebrating!
Should I decorate for my horse’s celebration?
Yes! Bring a little joy to your barn by making it festive for whatever occasion you are celebrating. Banners, sashes, balloons, party hats, costumes. The more festive the better! Use caution with helium balloons, as some horses may spook at the movement.
What kind of events can I plan around my horse's celebration?
The cake is just the beginning. Here are a few ways to make the moment even more memorable. And whatever you plan, we want to see it. Tag us at @winningheartsco and share the joy.
Barn Bake-Off: Challenge your barn friends to each bake a Winning Hearts™ cake and let the horses be the judges. Decorated entries, a little friendly competition, and a lot of happy horses. Everyone wins!
Birthday Pony Parade: Lead your horse through the barn in full birthday regalia. Sash, hat, balloons. Let every horse in the barn know whose day it is.
Retirement Send-Off: When that chapter closes, it deserves more than a quiet goodbye. Gather the people who were part of the journey and let your horse stand in the center of it all, one last time, as the undisputed guest of honor.
Equine Photo Shoot: Set up a simple backdrop, grab your toppings, and treat it like a full birthday session. The smash cake moment alone is worth the setup. Trust us, your followers will love it.
Gotcha Day Gathering: Invite the people who were part of your horse's journey and celebrate the day everything changed. Cake, stories, and the kind of gratitude that doesn't need many words.
Holiday Party: Bake a themed cake for Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or Thanksgiving, and bring a little seasonal joy to the barn. Think: Festive toppings, matching decorations, and a horse who has absolutely no idea what a holiday is, but is very excited about the cake.
Show Day Celebration: Win or lose, your horse showed up and gave everything. That deserves cake. Bring a pre-baked cake to the show grounds and celebrate right there at the stall or trailer. Tag us in your action shot or ribbon photo. We love those!
Does this have to be a whole production?
Not even a little. Some of the best moments in the barn happen without a camera or a crowd. If your idea of celebrating your horse is slipping into the barn before anyone else arrives, setting a cake on the ground, and watching them eat it, GREAT. That’s exactly what this is for.
The photos are optional. The occasion is optional. The only requirement is a horse, some water, and an oven.
We made this for every kind of horse person. Including the ones who would never call themselves the type to bake their horse a cake.
Is this a good gift for a horse owner or horse lover?
If you are searching for gifts for horse owners or gifts for horse lovers, Winning Hearts™ Cake Mix for Horses is one of the most original and unique options in the equestrian world right now. 🎂
It arrives ready to bake, requires nothing but water, and creates a moment they have never experienced before.
The reaction from the horse is the real gift. 🎁
Fun Fact: The concept of a "gotcha day" originated in the adoption community and has become one of the most beloved traditions among horse owners. It marks not just a date, but a bond worth celebrating.
Can I donate a cake mix?
Not every horse has someone to mark their birthday, celebrate their recovery, or tell them they matter. Rescue horses. Horses in transition. The ones who are just waiting for their next chapter to begin.
When you donate a Winning Hearts™ gift card, you become part of that story. You are the reason someone bakes a cake and shows a horse, maybe for the first time, what it feels like to be celebrated.
